The streets go wild at Aalborg Carnival

by Giang Pham

Last Saturday saw the famous Aalborg Carnival take place on the sunniest day of the year so far. This colourful, imaginative and overwhelming experience happens every May with around 60,000 participants and 100,000 spectators, making the event Northern Europe’s largest and most popular public carnival.

Anyone can participate in the parade, choose their costume, dress up and become a street performer on the streets of Aalborg. As they say, “the street is the stage – you’re the guru!” (“Gaden er scenen – du er gøgleren!”) This year’s theme was ‘The world is full of…’, and carnival-goers were encouraged to interpret it in any way they liked. The carnival kept participants’ imaginations flying higher than ever.
